This route is heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Maritime weather is famously changeable — fog can roll in from the coast within minutes, and conditions can shift from clear to heavy precipitation across short distances. The Canso Strait crossing and Cape Breton highlands are particularly exposed to wind. Nor'easters in winter can bring heavy snow and coastal flooding. The Cape Breton highlands create their own weather, with conditions at elevation often much worse than at sea level.

Winter

Winter storms hit this route hard. Nor'easters can bring 30-50 cm of snow and create whiteout conditions, especially on the exposed Cape Breton highlands. The Canso Causeway can close in extreme wind. Road closures on Highway 105 through Cape Breton are not unusual. Check conditions before departing and carry winter emergency supplies.

Summer

Fog is the main summer hazard, particularly along the coast and near the Canso Strait. It can reduce visibility to a few metres without warning. The drive is otherwise scenic and enjoyable in summer, but carry a jacket — temperatures on the Cape Breton highlands can be 10°C cooler than Halifax.
